Civil Administration – Newfoundland

This excerpt from the biography of Sir John Thomas DUCKWORTH provides context for understanding Newfoundland’s role during the war:

“On 26 March 1810 Duckworth was appointed governor of Newfoundland and commander-in-chief of the squadron there. Nearing the end of a long career, wealthy, and but recently remarried, he seems to have hesitated about taking the command of a relatively minor squadron on a rather remote station.”
