QUENTIN, CLAUDE, priest, Jesuit, missionary; b. 18 Feb. 1597; d. 31 Oct. 1676 at La Flèche, in Anjou.
Father Quentin became a Jesuit at Rouen on 5 Nov. 1617, and received almost all his education in that same city. He arrived in Canada in July 1635, and established himself at the Trois-Rivières residence. As he seemed unable to learn the native languages, he was sent in 1638 to minister to the French settlers on the Île de Miscou, in the Baie des Chaleurs. But some time later he had to return to Quebec because of his health. In 1641 he became procurator (treasurer) of the mission, a post that caused him to make several trips to France – in 1645, in October 1646 – before his final return there on 21 Oct. 1647.
He has sometimes been confused with Father Jacques Quentin, who had come to Acadia in 1613.
