CAUMONT, PIERRE DE, priest, missionary, canon; b. c. 1641 in France; d. 1694 at Quebec.

The Abbé Caumont arrived from France 16 May 1669. Nothing is known about his previous history. His first mission that we know of was at Boucherville, where we find him in 1670; in that same year he built a chapel there. From there he carried his ministry to Longueuil, Varennes, and other localities. In 1683 Boucherville had 200 inhabitants the missionary lived in the home of the seigneur Pierre Boucher*. From 1678 to 1680 M. de Caumont stayed at the seminary of Quebec because of an eye complaint which did not however prevent him from carrying on his ministry at the Côte de Beaupré and at Cap-Saint-Ignace. In 1684, upon the foundation of the chapter, he became one of the first canons of Quebec, and shortly afterwards, in 1685, he retired and took up residence in the seminary. According to a list for the year 1692 he was a member of the community of the seminary. He died 16 Feb. 1694 and was buried in the seminary chapel.
