Biography and Social History
In the later 20th century, traditional biographical approaches to history were bypassed by the “new” social history. Yet biographical writing is now making a comeback. This panel will explore the extent to which the boundaries that once separated these two approaches have been overcome, and how both have been changed as a result. Can we say that biographical writing in Canada has become informed by social history, and can biography itself become a useful means of approaching social history? We invite proposals from those who have been working at what once were the boundaries between biography and social history, and we aim to have an open panel discussion on the question.
E-mail abstracts of 250 words maximum and a one-page curriculum vitae in Rich Text Format to: History.Chair@utoronto.ca.
