On 26 April 1900 a large fire in Hull (Gatineau), Que., crossed the river and destroyed a part of Ottawa. It ravaged both communities, leaving 15,000 homeless, causing damage to the Hull Lumber Company’s mills and woodyard estimated at $400,000, and making it necessary to rebuild the whole city of Hull. The Ottawa and Hull Fire Relief Fund, organized after the fire, distributed about $1 million in aid.
