The battle of Hong Kong took place early in the Second World War, when Japan attacked Commonwealth troops, including soldiers of the Winnipeg Grenadiers and the Royal Rifles of Canada, who were stationed at Hong Kong. The garrison fell to the Japanese on 25 December 1941, and all Canadians were captured or killed.
